Remembering Jermaine Stewart

Celebrating the extraordinary life, dance, and timeless anthems of an 80s icon.

1. Rise to Fame & Early Roots

Today, Jermaine Stewart would have turned 69. Born on September 7, 1957, William Jermaine Stewart grew up with rhythm in his soul. Long before topping international charts, his journey into entertainment began on the dance floor as a teenager on the legendary television show Soul Train during its Chicago era. That vibrant energy propelled him into the spotlight as a background dancer and vocalist, where he famously auditioned and provided backing support for groups like Shalamar, alongside legends like Culture Club and The Temptations.

2. Chart-Topping Hits & Global Stardom

Stewart claimed international fame with an infectious blend of dance-pop, soul, and high-fashion style that defined the mid-1980s. His absolute biggest global smash was the unforgettable anthem “We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off”, which peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 with its socially conscious message of romance and restraint. Other major dance-floor fillers and fan favorites included “Get Lucky” and “Say It Again”.

3. Legacy & Remembrance

Tragically, Jermaine Stewart passed away on March 17, 1997, at the age of 39, due to an AIDS-related illness. Though his life was cut short, his vibrant spirit, style, and music continue to inspire joy and nostalgia across generations.
