School is back in session at Hillman College. Netflix has unveiled the official trailer and a new collection of images for its highly anticipated sequel to A Different World, bringing the beloved fictional campus back to life for a new generation.

The new series follows Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, as she begins her freshman year at Hillman. Played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon, Deborah enters the college her parents once called home while discovering a Hillman experience that is entirely her own.

The original A Different World ran from 1987 to 1993 and became one of television’s defining portrayals of life at a historically Black college. Originally spun off from The Cosby Show, the series ultimately developed its own identity through its ensemble cast, humor, relationships and exploration of Black college life.

A New Generation at Hillman

The sequel introduces a fresh group of students alongside familiar faces from the original series. Alijah Kai, Chibuikem Uche, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall and Kennedi Reece join Moon as members of the new Hillman generation.

Their stories will unfold against a campus that longtime viewers will recognize, while introducing new friendships, romances, ambitions and challenges.

Netflix describes the series as a new chapter rather than a simple recreation of the original. Across its first season, the show will follow Deborah and her peers as they navigate college, identity and the complicated expectations that can come with following in the footsteps of people who came before them.

The Original Cast Returns

For longtime fans, however, perhaps the most exciting part of the trailer is the return of familiar Hillman faces.

Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison are returning as Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, bringing the characters whose relationship became one of the defining romances of the original series back into the story.

Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell are also reprising their original roles, while additional returning performers include Dawnn Lewis, Jada Pinkett Smith and Debbie Allen in connection with the new series.

Their appearances give the sequel a direct connection to the show’s history without making nostalgia the entire point of the new story.

More Than a Reunion

That balance may ultimately be what determines whether the sequel succeeds. Returning to Hillman inevitably brings expectations, but the new series has to create characters and stories compelling enough to exist beyond the shadow of the original.

The trailer suggests that the new students will have plenty of personality of their own. Deborah arrives with the legacy of her parents behind her, but her college experience quickly begins to take on a life that belongs entirely to her.

The series is also being guided by creator and showrunner Felicia Pride, with Debbie Allen returning as an executive producer and directing the premiere. Their involvement provides a creative bridge between Hillman’s past and its new chapter.

Welcome Back to Hillman

The timing feels particularly fitting. The original series premiered on September 24, 1987, and Netflix’s new sequel is scheduled to arrive on September 24, 2026— exactly 39 years later.

The first season will consist of 10 episodes, introducing viewers to Deborah and her classmates while bringing back pieces of the Hillman world that made the original series so enduring.

The trailer makes one thing clear: Hillman has changed, but it has not lost its spirit. There are new faces in the classrooms, new stories waiting to unfold, and a legacy that still has plenty to say.
